Climate resilience entrepreneurship and sustainable development

Climate resilience deals with successfully coping and managing the impacts of climate change while preventing those impacts from growing old. It has become an emerging topic for discussion in this century. So, here we present you an interview featuring a dynamic climate activist Mr. Sagar Koirala with a discussion on the topic “CLIMATE RESILIENCE ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND YOUTH PARTICIPATION ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT” which was hosted by Ms. Simran Subedi. As per him, climate resilience is a kind of entrepreneurship activity from where we can control the growing cause of climate depletion by bringing slight changes to existing plans and involving more entrepreneurs in this project.

He mentioned that climate change is a burning issue that is affecting various sectors like industries, agriculture & health. Due to this various new kinds of insects and pests have been encountered in various places of Nepal and they are destroying the fertility and productivity of lands. People are suffering from different new kinds of diseases and are losing their lives due to the changing environment. He further added that we are depending more on manures for fertilization, due to which our efficiency is decreasing. Our exporting capacity of agricultural products has decreased and our importing capacity is increasing day by day. This kind of problem is also seen in industry and manufacturing companies too. For eg. unavoidable circumstances like floods, Landslides are also affecting electricity production. Climate change has also affected the speedy melting of ice in different mountains.

As the interview progresses he mentioned that policies that had been introduced to use the fertile land for production and vegetation hadn’t been implemented as of yet. There is more provision of word of mouth rather than bringing it to action. The research findings are also not appropriate till now. He talked about available resource extraction and Electronic vehicles (EV) also where he mentioned that we should make proper utilization of existing resources and not exhaust all resources at a time. It must be preserved for future generations. He also gave an example of Dubai before 20 years and how the petrol and diesel production of the country has led to rapid economic growth but now it is also focusing on Tourism Extraction.

When the question was about fossil fuel generation from dead animal remains, he replied that in Nepal only some places like Belbari from Koshi Province and the Kailali area may have generated energy from fossil fuel suggesting why we must focus on promoting natural protection technology. Examples are Green and Blue Hydrogen. As Nepal is an agricultural country, the production and animal husbandry has been decreasing due to laziness in doing hard work.

So, in order to protect the climate he suggested that the manufacturing of new industries and companies must be promoted to be done on unproductive land. For eg. in Dharan, promotion must be done to cultivate fertile land and increase the GDP of the Nation. With the help of concerned authorities, it might be possible to control climate change. The people there must show proactive behavior. He also added that we mustn’t stick to single resources, but rather look for other sustainable ways by considering natural calamities. We must focus on the pros and cons of a particular activity that we are going to carry out before starting it. We mustn’t do fragile activities that hamper the ecosystem. According to him, fossil fuel extraction must be stopped as now they are focusing on sustainability, climate conservation, and green activity. Proper research must be carried out to protect the environment. Promotional activities should be done to produce energy from cow and buffalo dung, plants, etc. Also, reduce the use of coal-producing the greenhouse effect to protect the climate from ozone layer depletion. We should promote the use of Bio briquette and shift ourselves from using fossil fuels. The use of sustainable vehicles like SAFA TEMPO must be promoted along with other sectors too for income generation. Lastly, he mentioned that we must use the latest technology and modify business policy for sustainable growth. We have to make a vision for the future 20-25 years and start a new business keeping in mind, doing activities for environmental conservation by increasing recycling and decomposing polythene. The interview ended on a note that there must be the use of new machinery focusing on maximizing efficiency by effective utilization of fewer resources.
